Now in its sixth decade, the Center continues be one of the most vibrant intellectual communities at the University of Utah, and one of the foremost public history centers in the nation. Your support now will fund the following specific initiatives:
- Funding the Wick R. Miller Endowed Scholarship, which supports any University of Utah student with an interest in studies related to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, or a demonstrated desire to preserve, cultivate, and advance any indigenous language or culture of the Americas. Preference is given to enrolled members of federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes.
- Expanding our Saline Stories project, by combining the AWC’s oral histories about the Great Salt Lake with other materials related to the lake in the Marriott Digital Library, to create a digital exhibit focused on the lake’s natural and human history. With assistance from the Marriott Library and the Digital Matters Lab, we hope to create a digital resource for people to learn about and engage with this unique ecosystem, the resources it provides, and the serious challenges it faces.
- Supporting the AWC’s annual free history field trips for students, teachers, and community
members. In 2024, the AWC took Topaz descendants and other interested Utah residents
to visit the Topaz museum and Japanese American incarceration site. In 2025, the AWC
plans to offer a free guided tour of Buffalo Soldier sites around northern Utah. Other
proposed trips include a visit to the Bear River massacre site, and a tour of transcontinental
railroad ghost towns.
In addition to supporting these specific initiatives, for $200 a year, you can also become an official member of the AWC and receive two books written by select recent visitors for our annual speakers’ series, as well as an invitation to a private lecture just for AWC members on a topic of interest on the American West.
Your support is crucial to each of these projects.
Gifts support student research, community outreach, and projects that span a wide
range of disciplinary fields at the University of Utah.
